Indianapolis comes alive in the summer with festivals that celebrate the city’s diversity, creativity and love of community. Whether you’re a lifelong Hoosier or new to Indy, there are four major events that anchor the season in 2026. From food and music to cosplay and performing arts, here’s what you need to know.

Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration (July 9–19, 2026) – Indiana Black Expo’s largest event spans 11 days of culture, business and community programming at the Indiana Convention Center. Expect more than 250 exhibitors and over 300 Black‑owned businesses, along with concerts, fashion shows and empowerment sessions. The celebration’s free exhibition hall features vendors, health screenings and education pavilions, but headline concerts at Gainbridge Fieldhouse require tickets – plan ahead as they often sell out. Downtown restaurants, hotels and parking garages fill quickly during peak days, so consider rideshare or arrive early.

Gen Con (July 30 – Aug. 2, 2026) – The world’s premier tabletop gaming convention returns to Indianapolis. Gen Con 2026 takes place at the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium and surrounding hotels. With four days of gaming, cosplay, panels and an enormous vendor hall, it draws tens of thousands of visitors and regularly sells out of badges. If you’re planning to attend, buy your badge early and book lodging soon – downtown hotels tend to fill months in advance. Even if you’re not a hardcore gamer, the costume parade and open gaming areas are worth a visit.

Indiana State Fair (Aug. 7–23, 2026) – For many Hoosiers, the Indiana State Fair marks the height of summer. The 2026 fair runs from Friday, Aug. 7 to Sunday, Aug. 23 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. In addition to livestock competitions and exhibits, the fair features rides, giant fair food (tenderloins, lemon shake‑ups and deep‑fried everything) and nightly concerts on the Hoosier Lottery Free Stage. Look for special theme days and 4‑H competitions throughout the two‑week run. If you’re driving, consider using IndyGo’s Fairgrounds shuttle or park-and-ride lots to avoid traffic congestion on 38th Street.

IndyFringe Festival (Aug. 13–23, 2026) – Theatre, comedy, dance, magic and storytelling fill Mass Ave during the IndyFringe Festival. The 2026 edition celebrates the festival’s 21st birthday and runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 23. More than 50 groups will perform in venues along Massachusetts Avenue and the Bottleworks District. Tickets range from $12 to $22, with flex passes available for audiences who want to sample multiple shows. Fringe central is at 719 E. St. Clair Street, with a Curtain Call Cantina for drinks between shows. Shows start on time and seating is first come, first served, so arrive early.
