Eagle Creek Park is a nature lover’s dream tucked on the northwest side of Indianapolis. One of the nation’s largest municipal parks, it contains roughly 3,900 acres of woodlands, meadows and wetlands plus another 1,400 acres of reservoir. Just minutes from downtown, the park provides a welcome escape with hiking trails, water recreation and abundant wildlife.

Hiking the trails

With more than 16 miles of paths and six main hiking trails winding through the property, Eagle Creek offers something for every ability level. The routes trace shady forests of beech, maple, tulip and white ash trees, cross sunny meadows and provide glimpses of the reservoir and small Lilly Lake. Stop often to listen for songbirds, watch for deer or chipmunks and admire native wildflowers. On the north end, the Fitness Trail features 20 exercise stations and 32 total activities, making it a great outdoor workout circuit.

Boating and watersports

The 1,400‑acre reservoir is the centerpiece of Eagle Creek and a paradise for paddlers and anglers alike. At the Marina you can rent canoes, kayaks, pontoon boats, row boats, paddle boats and paddle boards, or launch your own small craft. Power boats and jet skis are prohibited, so the water stays calm for fishing and wildlife viewing. The reservoir teems with crappie, bass, walleye, bluegill and channel catfish; check local regulations and bring an Indiana fishing license if you are over 17. After a day on the water, relax at the sand beach on the east side or enjoy lunch at one of the picnic tables.

Adventure course

For a thrill high above the forest floor, try the Go Ape treetop adventure course near the Earth Discovery Center. The aerial park includes zip lines, rope ladders, Tarzan swings and other challenges that test your agility and reward you with sweeping views. It operates from March through November; online reservations are recommended since the course is popular on weekends.

Nature and birding centers

Two learning centers enrich the Eagle Creek experience. The Earth Discovery Center houses hands‑on exhibits about Indiana’s ecosystems, displays live reptiles and amphibians and provides sweeping deck views of the reservoir. In summer you might even see monarch butterflies emerging from their chrysalises. The Ornithology Center is dedicated to birds of the Midwest; it hosts live raptor ambassadors and offers observation decks and family programs. Both centers have varied public programs, school field trips and summer day camps.

Other activities

The park also features a beach for swimming when lifeguards are on duty, several playgrounds (including one by the beach), a dog park, shelters for rent, soccer fields and miles of paved paths for running or cycling. The Peace Learning Center hosts youth programs and retreats year‑round.

Planning your visit

Eagle Creek Park is open daily from dawn to dusk. Daily entrance fees are around $6 per vehicle for Marion County residents, $8 for non‑residents and $1 for bikers or hikers. You’ll find entrances on 56th Street (5700 N. Eagle Creek Pkwy) and 71st Street (7100 N. Eagle Creek Pkwy). The park is easy to reach from I‑65. Annual passes are available through the Eagle Creek Park Foundation and include perks like discounts at the Marina and the Go Ape course.
