White River State Park is an urban oasis in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Spread across more than 250 acres along the west bank of the White River, it is Indiana’s only urban state park and a cornerstone of the city’s cultural district. Key attractions

Indianapolis Zoo & White River Gardens

The park’s largest draw is the Indianapolis Zoo, a 64‑acre campus that houses hundreds of species and unique interactive experiences. Visit the Oceans exhibit to walk beneath sharks and rays in the nation’s first underwater dolphin viewing dome, or watch orangutans swing through the world‑class International Orangutan Center. Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art

This museum celebrates the art and history of Indigenous peoples and the American West. Indiana State Museum & IMAX Theater

Located along the Central Canal, this three‑story museum explores Indiana’s geology, paleontology, natural history and cultural heritage. Interactive exhibits range from prehistoric fossils to modern innovations, and the attached IMAX theater screens both educational films and blockbuster releases on a six‑story screen.

NCAA Hall of Champions

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the NCAA Hall of Champions, a hands‑on museum detailing the history and traditions of college athletics. Two levels of interactive exhibits showcase all 24 NCAA sports, with trophies, trivia games, simulators and a replica basketball court that invites visitors to test their skills.

Victory Field

This award‑winning ballpark is home to the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple‑A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. With downtown skyline views, family‑friendly promotions and affordable tickets, Victory Field is the perfect place to catch a summer baseball game. The park often hosts themed nights and fireworks shows.

TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park

An outdoor music venue seating roughly 6,000 fans between the covered pavilion and open lawn, TCU Amphitheater hosts national touring acts from May through October. Surrounded by the river and parkland, it offers one of the city’s most scenic concert settings.

Military Park & Event Lawns

This 14‑acre green space at the north end of the park is Indianapolis’ oldest city park. Today it serves as a venue for festivals, fairs and fitness classes. Nearby lawns and plazas throughout White River State Park also host cultural festivals, food truck Fridays and charity walks.

Trails and recreation

White River State Park links to several of Indianapolis’ major pedestrian corridors. Walkers and cyclists can hop on the White River Wapahani Trail for riverside views or follow the Central Canal Towpath to the downtown Canal Walk. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail runs along the park’s eastern edge, connecting visitors to neighborhoods like Mass Ave, Fountain Square and the Wholesale District.

Rent a pedal boat or kayak to explore the Central Canal from the north entrance of the Indiana State Museum, or simply stroll the pathways past historic bridges, manicured gardens and public art installations. The park’s lawns are perfect for picnics, yoga and lawn games.

Planning your visit

White River State Park is located at 801 W. Washington St. and is easily accessible via the Cultural Trail, city bus routes and nearby parking garages. Many attractions charge separate admission, so consider purchasing combination tickets or city passes if you plan to visit multiple museums. The park is open daily, although hours vary by venue; most museums open mid‑morning and close around 5 p.m., while the amphitheater and Victory Field operate later for evening events.

Bring comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather — much of your time will be spent outdoors moving between attractions. Food and drink vendors operate seasonally, and there are plenty of shaded benches and picnic areas for snacks. Restrooms are available at each major venue.
